More About Katie
(the long version)
Katie Compton, MA, LPC, RPT™
I have my master’s in Professional Counseling and am qualified to counsel as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Texas. I specialize in the treatment of children and am credentialed as a Registered Play Therapist (RPT™). My formal education and experience has prepared me to counsel individuals, groups, families, children, and parents. In addition to the foundational lens of Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) protocols that can address trauma and other distress with enhanced instruction on somatic EMDR processing though Natural Processing (NP). I have completed training in Child-Parent Relationship Training (CPRT), Trauma-Focused Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (TF-EAP), Theraplay, Trust-Based Relationship Interventions (TBRI), and Sand Tray modalities. I am also a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE) and an endorsed Infant Mental Health Specialist (IMH-E (II)).
As an LPC and RPT™, I have counseled adults, adolescents, and child clients. I have led counseling groups and trainings for parents with a focus on strengthening the parent child/child relationship. Previously, I collaborated on research assessing children’s emotional and cognitive development at Texas Tech, was an early childhood teacher, volunteered with a Child Life Specialist in a hospital setting, and was a child development center director. I spent part of my career as a Parent Educator doing intensive home-visiting with families affected by substance abuse, attachment disruptions, and abuse or neglect. I have taught parenting classes at a drug treatment center, facilitated group-processing sessions at the county jail, and provided reflective supervision, trainings, and early childhood consultation services. I am also trained in Incredible Years Infant and Toddler curriculum, Triple P Parenting, Nurturing Parenting, Brazelton’s Touchpoints, and many other methods and parent education techniques for working with families.
Nature of Counseling
I trust children to express and explore aspects of their world through play and will come alongside their therapeutic journey of discovery, resolution, and growth. As a therapist, I facilitate reflective and supportive conditions that convey empathic, genuine understanding, and respect. This environment allows children to feel seen and heard in a way that lets them connect with their true-self and resolve difficulties.
In this work, I am privileged to see relationships come together to heal and repair hurts and pain. Sometimes the hurt comes out in the challenging behavior of children or the struggling coping skills of parents, both are just doing the best they can with what they know. I work with families and caregivers in these times to find the deeper unmet needs and nurture the strengths that can sometimes feel lost. We journey to embrace our perfectly imperfect parts with appreciation and care, knowing all behavior makes sense and using our detective skills as a curious observer to find understanding.
The counseling partnership begins a process of reflection and self-discovery through the context of experiences and relationships. Throughout our lives, our interactions can leave met or unmet needs that impact our perception of self and others. By clarifying our understanding of these needs, we learn that relational healing is both purposeful and possible. Together, we can explore heartache in a way that discovers acts of love, uncovers hope, and reveals a greater transformational goal that encourages self-worth and lasting change.
Personal Insight
My leisure time is spent outdoors, traveling, reading, volunteering, enjoying family, and centering relationships around a faith-filled life. I usually take one international trip per year and prioritize cultural emersion. I live on 100 acres outside the city and enjoy caring for my goats, donkeys, guinea fowl, cattle, and dogs. My ranch is my sanctuary and place of renewal.
